Summer student jobs at 4e

4elements Living Arts has applied to federal and provincial agencies for funding to provide three paying positions for students this summer, pending approval of the funding. We are now accepting applications for the four positions; see details of each below.

4elements Living Arts is an interdisciplinary arts organization on Manitoulin Island, working at the intersection of land | arts | community.  We develop land-based research & curatorial projects, run land-based arts education programs for kids and seniors, and build community through the arts.

Requirements:

To be eligible for jobs 1 & 2, students must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under theImmigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Job 1: Arts Educator/Educational Programs Facilitator

Start date: May 16th, 2016
Application Deadline: April 15th, 2016 deadline extended; May 9th
Wage: $15/hr 35 hrs/week for 15 weeks

Job Description:
The role of the candidate will be to facilitate 4elements’ suite of community programs (adults and kids), under the guidance and mentorship of the Executive Director and under direct supervision from the Cultural Programs Coordinator. Training and mentorship will be provided, but candidates should have experience working independently, some experience in facilitating community programs, and working with children. This is the perfect job for an emerging arts educator, early childhood educator, and/or outdoor/experiential learning educator looking to build career related experience, and to develop their leadership and facilitation skills.

Related educational backgrounds: ECE, Visual Arts, Bachelor of Education, Recreation-studies, or outdoor education.

Key Responsibilities:
– Facilitate kids’/adults’ outings & workshops throughout the summer
– Recruit and schedule 4e volunteers
– offer some support to administrative team (promotion, answering inquiries by email, accepting registration fees)

Ideal Candidate will have:
– valid drivers license and access to a vehicle
– passion for teaching and a basic knowledge of arts practice and a love of the outdoors
– Valid First Aid certification
– ability to obtain vulnerable sector police check prior to start date
– ability to work in a cross-cultural, collaborative environment

 

Job 2: Elemental Festival – Administrative Assistant

Start date: June 20, 2016
Application Deadline: May 15th, 2016 deadline extended; May 9th
Wage: $12/hr for 35hrs/weeks for 10 weeks
Organization: 4elements Living Arts, Kagawong

Job description: This is an entry level arts administrative position; an excellent opportunity for those hoping to gain experience in event planning or arts administration. This position will be directly supervised by the Festival Coordinator and accountable to the Executive Director. The candidate in this role will develop their research and communication skills and will work collaboratively while gaining valuable experience in a non-profit, artist run community organization.

Related educational backgrounds: arts administration, event planning, visual arts, design, or business administration.

Key Responibilities:

– Assist the festival coordinator in planning and organizing 4e’s 2nd annual Elemental Festival, a multi-arts festival celebrating contemporary art and our local landscape.
– Assist with grant writing for 2017 festival, including research and quote gathering
– Assist with developing sponsorship packages, liasing with local businesses
– Assisting with creation of festival marketing materials
– Assist with installation of art shows in the gallery space, and daily operations and maintenance of the gallery space (gallery attendant, answering phones when needed)
– Assist with administration and facilitation of regular programming when needed.

Ideal Candidate will have:

– an interest in community arts
– excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail
– valid divers license or reliable transportation to/from 4e office daily
– able to obtain a vulnerable sector police check
– valid first aid certification
– willingness to work weekends during the summer if needed
– ability to work in a cross-cultural, collaborative environment

To be eligible for job 3:

  • All students must be currently enrolled in a secondary, or post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation and have reached the age of 15 and not yet reached the age of 25 upon commencement of employment or up to 29 years for persons with a disability, if disabled, within the meaning of s.10 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.19, as amended from time to time.
  • Students must be employed full time for a minimum employment contract length of 217.5 hours or 30 days at 7.25 hours per day.
  • Proof of student enrolment must be provided to the employer.
  • Students must be residents of Ontario during the period of employment.
  • Students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
  • Note: The student must be living in Ontario at the time they start work. The intention of the program is to provide career related experience to eligible students that are also eligible to work in Ontario.

Job 3 –  Educational programs Assistant – 1 month placement

Start date: June 27

Wage: $11.25/hr 35 hrs/week for 30 days
Organization: 4elements Living Arts, Kagawong

Job Description: The candidate for this one-month placement will be trained to develop and facilitate 4elements’ land-based community arts programming. The placement will make the candidate eligible to be re-hired at 4elements as a program facilitator in the future, as well as providing valuable experience for those pursuing careers in arts education, outdoor leadership/guide, non-profit work, art therapy, education and outreach positions in a gallery setting etc.

Key Responsibilities:
– Assist with community programming, then once trained, lead facilitation of 4elements’ land & art based community programming in the month of July including: Institute of Walking family workshops, River School art/science camps for kids, Elemental Excursions art outings for seniors.
– Assist with outreach and promotion related to 4element’s community programs.
– Assist with developing program related material related to preserving organizational knowledge and continuity (ie materials that record what workshops have been run, developing written material to be used during workshops etc).

– excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail
– valid divers license or reliable transportation to/from 4e office daily
– able to obtain a vulnerable sector police check
